Overview:

Click here to learn how xp12d can be used as a pre- and post- processor for xpswmm.

The xp12d model base contains all the capabilities necessary to perform as a pre- and post processor for xpswmm and to produce a digital terrain model (DTM or TIN), including fast triangulation, contouring and sectioning routines. There are also optional modules available. All elements have been specifically designed for easy use and are graphically interactive to give immediate feedback to the user.

The Base includes the string types 2d, 3d, 4d, interface, pipe, text, alignment and super to allow accurate civil engineering and survey modeling. Comprehensive COGO operations are included in the base. Alignment strings consist of horizontal and vertical geometry. The horizontal and vertical components are created and edited interactively using the IP method on plan and section views.

Cross-section templates can be easily created in The Base and applied as a single template to the left and right of the design string. This allows the user to design simple pipe systems, rivers, canals and similar models. When adjustments are made to the strings or templates involved in xp12d functions, the model Recalc facility automatically removes invalid information and replaces it with updated geometry and volumes.

There are three types of views in the xp12d model base: Plan, section and perspective – all of which can be used to examine, construct or edit information. The three views are linked so that data can be viewed and manipulated using more that one view while reflecting changes to the design throughout.

For the plan view, line styles and symbols can be defined by the user. Plan drawings can show pipes to scale or stylized using line types for pipe sizes. Construction setout tables can be exported into spreadsheets or automatically printed. Click to enlarge screengrab

The section view extends the concept of a section to include a channel on either side of the string being profiled. Any strings in the channel can be displayed in the section view – hence potential clashes between the profiled string and services such as telephone lines, electricity cables, gas lines and drainage and water pipes are easy to detect. The perspective view allows for quick interpretation of the model. This view will allow you to view your system or watershed in 3D view and edit the information that is displayed. Depth contours, fences, or other physical attributes can also be incorporated into the output file. This sort of realistic representation facilitates conveying complex information to engineers or the general public alike. Click to enlarge screengrab

In any of the three views, plots and reports of any of the data can be created at any time. Plots can be output in a variety of formats including Windows printers, HPGL and PostScript, DWG/DXF and Microstation. Powerful plot parameter files are provide for tailoring long and cross section plots and the availability of user defined title blocks, text fonts and line styles, means that final quality plots, requiring no CAD clean up, can all be produced with xp12d.

A powerful macro language is included in the xp12d base module, allowing users to build their own options using xp12d’s vast library of graphics and analysis commands.

xp12d modules

Volumes - This module is used for calculating earthworks volumes within a user defined polygon using either end area or exact calculations. Volumes can be calculated between a triangulated model and a fixed heath or between two triangulated models. Reports of cut and fill areas and volumes are given on a section by section basis using the end area method, a height range basis by the cell method, or on a depth range basis using exact volumes.

The volumes module has options to calculate surface area, depth contours (isopachs) and the intersection of triangulations, and options for slope, aspect and viewshed analysis. Color coding can be used for the slope and aspect analysis. Depth volumes can be color coded for validation and plots.

xpswmm Rivers input/output. This module allows data to be seamlessly transferred between xpswmm and xp12d. Such interaction allows xp12d to read water level results from xpswmm to create a detailed water surface that accurately defines the river bank between the defined cross sections. This water surface is used to create 3D images, AVI files with fly down river perspective, cross section plots, river profiles and plan drawings colored and contoured by depth. screengrab

Historical flood data can also be presented in xp12d using the “river mapper”. This interface creates water surfaces from existing water level data. The interface uses “shape stings” to add incredible power and flexibility to the mapping process. Meandering streams and off line storages can easily be mapped without burdening your hydraulic modeling package with additional cross section calculations. screengrab

The xp12d rivers module reads numerous data formats including: HEC2 data, EEBY cross section data, USGS DEM formats and XYZ data. The add on AutoCAD DWG/DXF and Microstation DGN modules enable existing drawing/elevation data to be imported to xp12d. Elevation data can be combined from several sources and manipulated to form a final ground surface from which cross section data is created.

xpswmm Drainage Input/Output and Drainage String is similar to the Rivers module in that allows data to be seamlessly transferred between xpswmm and xp12d. The drainage module also provides added features for the design of drainage networks, typically those required for urban developments. The drainage string itself consists of manholes, joined by straight or curved pipes. Invert levels and pipe grades can be set or modified graphically or by typed input. Manhole and pipe sizes are also user definable. screengrab

Data is exported to xpswmm for solving then read back into xp12d to:

  • Update xp12d with the new inverts and pipe sizes.

  • Plot customized drainage long sections with service crossings, hydraulic grade line, flow, velocity and/or user defined data. Services that cross the drainage pipe and those within a user defined corridor (parallel to the pipe) are also included. screengrab

  • Plot Customized plan drawings indicating catchments, pipe sizes and types, inverts and more. screengrab

  • Print pit construction schedules in predefined custom formats.

  • Produce pit/pipe quantity schedules by pipe sizes, depths, types etc (all custom defined).

  • Detailed excavation volumes reflecting pipe sizes, over excavation for bedding materials and user defined trench shapes. Volumes by depth can then be calculated using the xp12d volumes package.

  • Calculate and display/plot flooded areas from overflow volumes or overland flow discharges (normal depth calculations).

The HEC-RAS Input/Output Module will substantially reduce your modeling setup time for both open channel and urban pipe systems by setting up your model ready to run. xp12d translates information stored in the strings and cross sections as nodes and links and stores data for export to HEC-RAS. Once calculations have been performed in HEC-RAS, results can be imported back into xp12d for high-quality presentation of results. screengrab

The DXF/DWF Input/Output Module will read and write DWG or DXF files up to and including ACAD 2000i and IntelliCAD. The reader recognizes most AutoCAD entities and makes appropriate interpretation in terms of xp12d model elements. The module also writes out plots and 3D data, creating ACAD blocks for xp12d symbols. xp12d model triangles are written out as colored faces so that they can be used in CAD packages for rendering.

The Microstation Input/Output Modules is used to read specific information from a Microstation .dgn file and to write out plots, 3D data and triangles directly to Microstation .dgn files.

Seamlessly import and export ARC View data with the ARC View Input/Output Module.

Seamlessly import and export MapInfo data with the MapInfo Input/Output Module.
